Green School

School Activities

What is Green-Schools’?

Most young people care deeply about environmental issues, and wish to make a positive change in the environment around them. The programme provides an ideal way for fostering environmental awareness in the entire school. It encompasses four principle aspects:
1. Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme.
2. Green-Schools is holistic. It aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school.
3. Green-Schools is both a programme and an award scheme.
4. Green-Schools is a long-term programme.

Committee

The Green SchoolsCommittee meets regularly. It consists of pupils from 3 to 6 classes. In 2006/2007 our main target was to reduce our energy consumption. Emphasis was placed on ‘the Power of One’ as advertised by the E.S.B. This helps us to realise the importance of each individual’s effort.

Green flag

Green Schools is co-ordinated by AN TAISCE the National Trust for Ireland. Nationally the programme had another successful year. We were delighted to receive our second flag in May 07. For the first time the awards ceremony for the Munster schools was held nearer home-at the “Lifetime Lab” in Cork city.

Energy Saving

Our climate is changing and there are many things we can do to combat this change. Most of the energy we use to heat our homes and schools comes from fossil fuels such as oil, gas or coal. When these are burned they release carbon dioxide which is the main greenhouse gas.We must do all we can to cut down on the release of carbon dioxide into our environment. There are many things we can do within our homes and schools to save on energy and to cut down on carbon dioxide. This will make the world a better place for all to live in.If each of us makes a small change in our daily habits it will all contribute to a much bigger change.Saving energy, recycling and showing more concern for our environment are just some of the things we can do.
